Authorities have identified the fatal victim in the county's Christmas Eve house fire as Michael John Jansky of Tres Pinos.

With rainy weather over the final shopping weekend before Christmas and more storms forecast for Christmas Day, the California Highway Patrol prepared itself for “some of the toughest challenges.”

Hollister School District officials followed the news last Friday of the Connecticut shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School closely as it was unfolding, with reports of 20 children dead, along with eight adults including shooter Adam Lanza and his mother.

Property owners of apartments and other multi-family rental units have until Dec. 31 to install carbon monoxide alarms in ccunits to comply with a 2010 state law. The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act required single-family homes with an attached garage or a fossil fuel source to install the alarms by July 1, 2011, but multi-unit property owners were given more time to come into compliance. Alarms are required in all units with attached garages or fossil fuel burning appliances.

Twenty local children will be recipients Saturday of bicycles from the sheriff’s office that were obtained through a grant.

Two simultaneous fires occurred Dec. 19 in the same medical complex where a November blaze destroyed one of five buildings there, while there were two separate vehicle fires the same morning.

The Gilroy Police Department’s Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

The Hollister Animal Shelter resources have been strained by housing 54 roosters collected in a late November raid at a home on Frazier Lake Road – with an additional six animals taken in during an arrest on Fairview Road on Dec. 7.
