Guest View: San Benito County’s ‘Backyard Oil’?
The Discovery Channel has a new television program called “Backyard Oil”. It depicts the supposedly modern day oil boom in the hills of south central Kentucky. Astoundingly enough, environmental concerns are never mentioned during the show. It seems as though oil production is as easy as using a dousing rod to find a likely spot in your backyard, and then calling up the drilling rig to start work the next day.
Letter: Water Cooler answers on IRS scandal were interesting
We found the responses to last week’s “Around the Water Cooler” question to be very interesting. They seemed to go with the political leaning each respondent has exhibited judging from past commentaries. Ruth Erickson provided the best response and Richard Herrera really has no clue! Mr. Herrera, it is not the responsibility of the IRS to specifically target groups or individuals; they are there to work impartially for all Americans as governed by our tax laws. In this case they chose to target conservative groups who were not in line with the current administration, and hence are the ones responsible for making this a hot political issue. What they did was wrong!
Letter: Clarifying comments from immigration story
I believe the description that you printed of my comments regarding the County Board of Supervisors were taken out of context because you did and include that I also said, “If you do feel it necessary to address the national debate on immigration reform, I would think it would be suffice to state that the city of Hollister 1) believes that immigration reform should be addressed, 2) cares about its residents, 3) supports keeping families intact, and 4) needs an adequate labor force, of which immigrants are a key component” and the point I was making was that the supervisors should not be addressing specific policies better taken at the federal level.
Letter: Reader concerned about fracking in the county
I want to thank City Editor Melissa Flores for her front page article on the May 7 board of supervisors meeting and the issue of oil and gas fracking in this county. I wonder if the three supervisors who voted for the watered-down gas and oil well ordinance are aware of what is happening in the rest of the country where fracking deep into the earth to extract gas and oil has devastated the land, water and air. In North Dakota (Bakkan gas fields) and in Texas, where fracked wells have been producing fossil fuels for some time, the ranchers and farmers are finding their cattle no longer salable because of contamination, and the quality of their rural lives destroyed by huge trucks rolling up and down newly built gravel roads and creating noise pollution and air pollution that has increased asthma and other lung diseases in these areas. I wonder if these supervisors are aware that it takes one million gallons of water to sink one well? Where is that water to come from in these times of increasing drought? And why do the oil and gas corporations who finance these projects (with taxpayer subsidies among others) refuse to reveal the variety of chemicals that are used to open up the passages where this liquid gold will flow to their CEOs?
Letter: Reminder to attend Hollister Airshow this weekend
Great news! The Hollister Airshow is taking place Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, even though 64 U.S. air shows have been canceled!
Guest View: Taking care of mom close to home
Many of us know what it’s like to see a loved one grow older. We see the joys that a grandparent experiences, but also the hardships that come with health issues and becoming more dependent on others. Often, we ride the “roller coaster of health” with them. As we do, it can be difficult to know how to best help our loved ones continue to live long, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Letter: Support Parkinson’s research Wednesday
My name is Aaliyah and I am 10 years old. My favorite actor in the whole world is Michael J. Fox. I love the movie “Back to the Future”. I have the DVDs, poster and a T-shirt. I sold some of my dolls on eBay so that I could make enough of my own money so that I could pay to be a Team Fox member. I reached my goal and my mom helped me sign up. I am an official team member for TEAM FOX. This gives me the ability to raise funds to help with Parkinson’s research. It makes me sad to know that he is sick. If you could help me spread the word I would appreciate it. I am holding my first fundraiser on May 1 at Papa Murphy’s Pizza. It’s called Pizza for Parkinson’s. I will also have a bake sale in the front of the store too. I am really excited. Thank you for reading my letter.
Letter: Resident opines on freedom of speech
Freedom of Speech: “I am proud and thankful that we have good police officers, sheriffs, and CHPs here in our city.” Our Police Department received an award tonight for protecting our city. (To the columnist, please do not re-word my letter; I really do not appreciate it. Thank you.)
